Easter Cellar Release - Vignerons Schmölzer & Brown
This Easter, we're celebrating with a special Cellar Release of Vignerons Schmölzer & Brown Pinot Noir & Syrah.
After two decades working in vineyards and wineries in Australia, New Zealand, Italy and Spain – including a significant stint at Kooyong on the Mornington Peninsula – winemaker Tessa Brown and architect partner Jeremy Schmölzer settled in Beechworth, planting their first vines in 2014 and 2015.
Beechworth’s diverse climate and soils have played a key role in shaping some of Australia’s most sought after wines. With over 10 years at their Beechworth property, Vignerons Schmölzer & Brown craft a range of wines from fruit grown in their own vineyards, neighbouring sites, and the nearby King Valley.
Brown takes a hands-off approach in the winery, relying on native yeasts, spontaneous malolactic conversion, and only minimal sulphur dioxide to preserve the purity of the fruit. This ensures that the intense work in the vineyard shines through in every bottle.
This Easter, we’re excited to bring you a selection of very rare wines. Tessa and Jeremy have delved into their personal museum to bring you two vintages of two varieties from two individual vineyards.
The Wines:
2015 Brunnen Pinot Noir - $89
Now approaching a decade in bottle, Pinot Noir from the excellent 2015 vintage leans into earthy, savoury notes, with a base of red cherry settling gracefully beneath. Its structure and edges have softened slightly, yet the wine remains balanced and drinks beautifully.
2018 Brunnen Pinot Noir - $78
A cooler growing season in 2018 resulted in a fragrant wine with bright acidity, and fine tannins. Dried raspberry and cranberry lead the way, with a lovely autumnal character that becomes more pronounced after 15–20 minutes in the glass.
2018 Thorley Shiraz - $78
2018 was just the second harvest of Shiraz grown in the Tessa and Jeremy's own Thorley vineyard. Even at this early stage, the young vines produced fruit with remarkable concentration, yielding a wine brimming with violet, blue fruits, and pepper, all supported by fine tannins and bright acidity.
2021 Thorley Syrah - $66
Another vintage, another beautifully refined expression of cool-climate Syrah. Lively pepper, spice, and violet on the nose give way to black cherry, cool plum, toasty oak, and a touch of olive flesh on the palate, finishing with a savoury edge.
