'Spring Has Sprung' Wine Six Pack
From Fiano to Cabernet Franc, this season's six-pack of wine focuses on grapes matched to all the weather Melbourne spring brings.
2019 Fallen Giants Riesling, Grampians VIC
The vines that produce this dry, aromatic Riesling were planted in the ancient red soils of the Grampians in 1969. Concentrated and focused, it offers some wonderful citrus depth with a stony mid-palate and crisp acidity. Perfect for house-made terrine and cold cuts.
2018 Bella Luna Fiano, Goulburn Valley VIC
The warm, sunny days and mild evening temperatures of Goulburn Valley are well suited to southern Italian varieties like Fiano. This is a medium weighted and lightly textured white wine, with notes of pineapple, golden apple and gentle creaminess. A great drink with charcoal-grilled chicken and fresh spring salads.
2020 Hoddles Creek Pinot Gris, Yarra Valley VIC
This superb Yarra Valley producer makes skin contact Pinot Gris that screams out for the springtime sun. Winemaker Franco d’Anna uses the colour, tannin and flavour extracted during the skin contact process to build an extra level of complexity into his Pinot Gris, balancing the natural fruitiness of the variety.
2019 Montevecchio ‘Rosso’ Lagrein blend, Heathcote VIC
Montevecchio Rosso speaks with an Italian accent, but this isn’t a wine you’ll ever find in the old country. Rosso is a field blend of varieties from all over Italy, including Nero D’Avola, Sangiovese and Lagrein. A medium-bodied wine with spice and cherry, it could take a brief esky-chill while you’re grilling your spring lamb.
2019 Greenstone ‘Gusto’ Sangiovese, Heathcote VIC
Gusto is from Greenstone vineyard, famed for the quality of its Sangiovese. With a splash of Shiraz and Tuscan variety Colorino, there’s plenty of pizzazz on show. Savoury, with typical Sangiovese tannin, the use of whole berries and whole bunches brings a bright red fruit character perfect for barbecued pork ribs.
2019 Airlie Bank Cabernet Franc, Yarra Valley VIC
Winemaker Tim Shand unashamedly tells everyone how much he loves making this wine, even though 100% whole bunch Cabernet Franc can sometimes mean staring down the barrel of a leafy, green and hard wine. Never fear, the team at Airlie Bank have got the balance just right with a big punch of spice and slurpy purple fruit - it’s a winner. winner for your steak dinner.
