This month's cellar release is a wonderful example of old vine Bordeaux from a thrilling vintage.

The producer
The Jean Faure estate has existed since the 16th-century but was in neglect until winemaker, Olivier Decelle, took it over in 2004. After using organic and bio-dynamic methods to painstakingly regenerate the vineyard, the vineyard was brought back to its top-tier ranking of Grand Cru Classé in 2012. The estate is planted with a mix of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec grapes that thrive on the deep clay soils they're grown on. 

The region
Bordeaux wines ooze class and sophistication, particularly those at Grand Cru level. Based in the southwest corner of France. Saint-Émilion is found in the heart of Bordeaux, with Jean Faure's estate sitting alongside renowned vineyards such as Château de Cheval Blanc and Château Figeac. The terroir in the Saint Emilion sub-region has much clay, limestone and gravel and over hundreds of years of expert mapping and planting of the vineyards which contribute to the making of exceptional-quality wines. 

The wine
The 2014 vintage had a near-perfect flowering season followed by a coolish and long summer that finished strong and warm. The result was a long and balanced ripening period with great concentration and power but still a beautiful structure. It's incredible to be drinking now but will age well into 2030. This impressive wine would definitely benefit from a decanting, which we recommend to do couple of hours before you're ready to enjoy it.
